The GMC HUMMER EV Gets an Overlanding Upfit by EarthCruiser

It's on display at Overland Expo Mountain West this weekend

The GMC HUMMER EV EarthCruiser upfit may offer a peek into the future of electric overlanding.

The GMC HUMMER EV EarthCruiser takes the rugged, all-electric pickup to a new level of overlanding utility. EarthCruiser started with a carbon fiber “house” fully integrated into the chassis of the GMC Hummer EV SUT. When parked, the insulated tri-layered roof pops up making the interior user friendly. Fully extended, there’s 80 inches of headroom at the entry, 76 inches in the hallway, and 35 inches at the bed.

Sleeping capacity is for two, and the unit has a full-size RV bed above the cab.

EarthCruiser CEO Lance Gillies had this to say about his company’s creation:

“We are proud to work with GMC on the design and manufacturing of such an exceptional product. It feels right, it feels like it belongs. Using our years of overlanding expertise, we have ensured nothing is out of place, unnecessary or wasted in this vehicle. This collaboration with the GMC team has provided the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the zero-tailpipe emission possibilities for overland and recreational vehicle travelers. We have produced a comfortable, capable product, built to a high caliber of excellence – one that our customers can take pride in.”

There are integrated, 605W roof-mounted solar panels feeding a 460Ah lithium 12V battery. It also has a 1500W inverter. No word of te possibility to slowly charge the Hummer EV using this system. EarthCruiser did say that their 6 kilowatt hours of 12V lithium battery can power the refrigerator for up to a week.

There are a few questions that have not been answered: like, weight. With the lightweight (and expensive) carbon fiber design, it should be relatively light. With the Hummer EV’s already staggering weight, I would imagine that they kept things as light as possible.

On the exterior, large pods flank the camper shell, and they are large enough to hold bigger items, like essential camping gear. There is no word on pricing; however, you can reserve this camper for $100. To reserve the GMC HUMMER EV EarthCruiser upfit, click (here).
