The all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUV is finally here. This off-road-focused Trailhawk model combines premium SUV appointments and technology with better than average off-road capability and electrification. It uses the same powertrain that is also in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. It results in quick acceleration (around 6 seconds 0-60 MPH), a combined 375 horsepower, an estimated 25 miles of total electric driving ranger, and a sophisticated 4WD system. Naturally, all this comes at a price. More on this later.
I drive it on a challenging Texas off-road trail to see what it’s capable of.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
This newest Trailhawk comes with a low-range geared transfer case for slow speed off-road crawling. The height-adjustable suspension can be raised for almost 11 inches of clearance. The front features a disconnectable anti-sway bar that allows for a bit more articulation. If it does happen that one or two of the wheels are off the ground, this Grand Cherokee can distribute the power appropriately to keep going on rough terrain. It also has fairly aggressive all-terrain tires and tough steel skid plates underneath.
The 17 kWh battery pack hides within the flow of this SUV. It leaves the cabin space mostly unaffected, but it does protrude a little under the vehicle. This is why massive steel skid plates are there to protect the battery from road debris or off-road obstacles.
Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine that is mated to an electric motor and an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The combination has an EPA-rated 56 MPGe or 23 MPG when running on gasoline power alone. The total driving range is estimated at 470 miles, and I got very close to these estimates on my 100-mile on-road drive during the event. In fact, I managed to go just over 30 miles on electricity alone during my on-road driving.
This Jeep has an impressive off-road capability. The battery helps it with a lower center of gravity, the tires are grippy, and the 4WD system can distribute the power effectively. The spotters were helping negotiate the trail, and this Grand Cherokee went place I did not expect it to go.
The starting price of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhaw 4xe is just over $62,000. The Trailhawk I was driving had optional equipment to bring the price to about $70,000. There are many competitive premium SUVs from Volvo, BMW, Audi, and Range Rover at this price – but very few competitors will have the clearance or the traction to climb over a similarly tough trail.
