After a week of racing, 2 minutes separate the top 3.

Many of the race favorites running in the 2022 Dakar Rally are down on points, thanks to breakdowns, penalties and crashes!

  • While celebrity drivers like Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Sébastien Loeb (among many others) are still in the hunt, they are not dominating. As of the end of the sixth leg, only Al-Attiyah appears on the top 10 among Cars. A notable battle brews in the Truck class as three Kamaz Master trucks are within seconds of each other.

You can read the pre-race competitor’s list (here).

  • The GR Toyota Hilux is of great interest to our TFLtruck.com site as it is powered by a similar powertrain found in the brand new Toyota Tacoma and overseas’ Land Cruiser. Yep, a twin-turbocharged V6 comes right out of the Tundra and Land Cruiser.

Thanks to the supremely capable production version of the Land Cruiser 300 V6 twin turbo engine, the team was able to work with the engine in stock form. The standard Toyota turbos are used, as well as a standard intercooler. The orientation of the intercooler had to be modified for the race car, but the part itself remains stock, as it is inherently extremely efficient.

  • We’re following the Toyota team with interest as they are the closest thing we have to a pickup the U.S. is familiar with in the 2022 Dakar.
  • Things are about to heat up!
