In this review, we take a new 2022 Ford Maverick and a new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz to Tombstone Hill to see which one is better on a moderate off-road trail. We also brought a new GMC Canyon AT4 Off-road Performance Edition (OPE) midsize pickup truck to set the benchmark for the new compact pickups.
The new 2022 GMC Canyon AT4 OPE has the traditional truck off-road gear. It’s a body-on-frame design with a Hi/Lo 4×4 transfer case. It has low gearing, the G80 mechanical rear locking differential, and aggressive Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac all-terrain tires. Power comes from a 3.6L gas V6 that is rated at 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission does the shifting.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz you see here is a fully-optioned Limited trim with the 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 engine and an 8-speed dual-clutch automated transmission and AWD. The AWD system has a locking center differential that can send 50% of power to the front and 50% to the rear. It also has a “snow” mode that helps with traction. It does not have a specific off-road mode.
The 2022 Ford Maverick is a fully-optioned Lariat model with AWD and a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine that is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This is not a Maverick FX4 off-road model that offers more aggressive tires. The Maverick offers several driving modes, and Slippery mode is one of the more aggressive ones for this non-FX4 model.
