There are some serious rumblings that Mercedes-Benz may build an electric G-Class “EQG.”
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius wants to build an Electric G-Class. A report from the German website Mbpassion states that the upcoming EQG will debut in this September at the IAA Mobility show as a concept. If these rumors and leaks prove true, the EQG will be based on the current (modified) G-Class‘ frame, with the battery and motors living within the frame. It appears it will keep its three locking axles.
Leaked doccuments indicate that the electric G-Class off-roaders will be called the EQG 560 and the EQG 580. Back in early April, 2021, Mercedes-Benz patented the EQG nameplate. The registered names are ‘EQG 580’ and ‘EQG 560’ according to the documents from the European Union intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
It is expected that this electric G-Class (the EQG) will use the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS‘ powertrain.
If you’re curious, here’s some more detail on the EQS’ powertrain from our coverage a few months ago:
We do not how the the EQG 560 and the EQG 580 will be fitted. It’s possible that the Mercedes-Benz EQG 560 may have a smaller battery, or less performance. That’s just our guess, but it seems logical. The information we received indicates that the EQG will have a maximum range of over 300 miles.
It’s possible that some of the research that went into the EQC 4×4² off-road concept may go into the EQG.
Mercedes has selected the IAA Mobility show (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) in Munich to officially announce their three new sub-brands – AMG, Maybach, and G-Class. The IAA Mobility shoe is Held from Tuesday, Sep 7, 2021 – Sun, Sep 12, 2021. The event is known as the “world’s largest mobility show.” It’s possible that they may mention, show a concept or provide a sneak peek of this electric G-Class.
