Should Chevrolet build a more off-road worthy version of their latest Silverado HD truck? At least one dealer says this would be a very successful seller. Here is the thing. The Ram Power Wagon has dominated the heavy-duty off-road truck segment for many years. Recently, a new Ford Super Duty Tremor joined the fight. GMC is currently offering a Sierra HD AT4, but Chevrolet could really use a heavy-duty truck model with more off-road capability than a Z71. Why? Chevy needs more halo trucks to build excitement and ultimately sell more trucks.
A local Chevy/GMC dealership reports that the new GMC AT4 trucks are selling very well. In fact, the demand for AT4 trucks often outstrips the supply. The current Silverado 1500 Trail Boss is a successful seller as well. This begs the question, why no HD Trail Boss?
How should an HD Trail Boss be configured? It should have a larger diameter aggressive off-road tires. I would say 33-35 inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs would do the trick. GM already has a good 4×4 system with 4-Auto mode. The new Trail Boss should also offer a selectable rear differential locker and either a limited slip front differential or a front locker as well. Some well-tuned springs and shocks and a new rock crawl mode!
What do you think? Should GM build an HD Trail Boss? How would you outfit this new truck? Please let us know in the comments below.
