It’s finally here! We have all the specs and details on the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4Xe plug-in gas/electric hybrid. Perhaps the most surprising specification is the total output of this new Jeep. It’s rated at 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque! This makes it the most powerful Wrangler ever made. When it comes to market by early 2021 – it will be also be the most efficient Wrangler ever at an estimated 50 MPGe.

The powertrain combines the 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder eTorque system with an additional electric motor that is built into the 8-speed automatic transmission. The smaller eTorque electric motor is attached to the combustion engine via the serpentine belt. This is very similar to what Jeep offered before. However, the additional and more powerful electric motor inside the transmission allows for the new massive total power output and up to 25 miles of all electric driving. The energy is stored onboard in a 17 kWh battery that is hiding under the rear seat of the four-door Wrangler. There will be no two-door 4Xe Wrangler offered at this time.

The new hybrid system allows the driver to save the electric driving for later or use it immediately. Once the battery is depleted the gasoline engine provides most of the power and also charges the battery as any hybrid would.

The plug-in hybrid system does add approximately 500 lbs to the total weight of the Wrangler, but it does not take away any of the off-road specification. The Wrangler 4Xe retains the same ground clearance, approach/departure angles, solid axles (Rubicon has the front and rear lockers and a disconnecting front sway bar), and up to 30 inches of water fording capability.

The 2021 Wrangler 4Xe will be available in base configuration, Sahara 4Xe, and Rubicon 4Xe. The only thing we currently do not know is the price. Will this system be more expensive than the existing Wrangler EcoDiesel? We will have to wait and see.
